Pyrex - This garbage product explodes in the oven under factory rated settings.

I've now had two different Pyrex pans explode in the oven at 400 degrees after being put in from room temp. These products are garbage and that's where I've put every Pyrex product that I owned. I will never buy nor use this trash again and I hope nobody else will either!

Resolved: Pyrex baking dish exploding in oven

Updated by user Jun 10, 2025

Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with product replacement.

Updated by user Jun 10, 2025

The set is beautiful, but buyers beware!

Original review Jun 10, 2025

While using the larger of the 3 baking dishes for mac & cheese for the first time after the dish was placed in the oven at 350, after 5 minutes all I heard was a loud explosion in the oven with glass food everywhere. My granddaughter was cut while helping to clean both the oven and broiler unit.

This ruined Sunday dinner because it took us over 3 hours to clean, plus another day to make sure all the glass was off the floor. I was so disappointed and upset, being as though food is so expensive now.

Exploded!!

Pyrex - Exploded!!
Pyrex - Exploded!! - Image 2

It would not be fair of me to rate the entire company based on one incident, no matter how serious it was. I have used Pyrex since I was a young woman without issue.

However, when using their 9 x 13 baking pan with handles and having properly followed the instructions by preheating my oven and allowing food to cool on a dry area, after 10 minutes, it did not just crack, but exploded into what seemed like thousands of pieces all over the kitchen counter floor, and into other food ready to serve, causing me to throw it all in the trash. Fortunately. My son, who was standing next to the dish was not injured.

Upon research I find this has happened before. Just thankful no one got hurt, but only by the grace of God.

Preferred solution: I don’t want you to replace this glass pan. I would like a refund for the product and for the ruined dinner groceries. Glassed flu not only ruining the appetizer, but another appetizer sitting next to

Pyrex are as arrogant as they are unreputable.

Guest

If you place your hot dish on a cold surface coming out of the oven then I guess you learned a valuable lesson. Judging from the picture of your food I wonder how you arrived at a home cooked dinner costing $250?? I've used Pyrex for over 50 years and I have never had this happen so either its a freak accident or user error...but $250???

Agree. Don't put hot dishes on a cold surface!

Guest

If you put hot pyrex onto a much cooler surface it WILL explode. Solution: use ovenproof silicone pot mats to place the hot pyrex upon when it first comes out of the oven and it WILL NOT explode.

Broken Pyrex lids

Broken Pyrex lids

I invested in the Pyrex brand food (round and oblong) storage containers - which are made to glass, but have lids made of either rubber or plastic. I am very disappointed because these lids begin to split and tear in time.

Thus, this leaves me with glass storage containers with NO LIDS - they no long serve their purpose of keeping food properly covered and sanitary.

I have four (4) "2 cup - 470 mL" size lids; and four (4) 3 cup -750 mL lids that have split and are not useful anymore for properly storing food, which these containers are made for! I am requesting a replacement of my lids.

User's recommendation: Don't buy - because the lids destroy themselves!

I have cooked many a meal in Pyrex products. My mom had Pyrex products as well, and we NEVER had any issues or complaints about their products.

The ONLY 2 reasons I can think that would cause Pyrex products to "Explode" (SMH) would be if one was improperly utilizing the product and heating them up WAAAY beyond manufacturers recommendations or if they had dropped the products on the floor & it already had a crack in the glass, but outside of that, I have literally ZERO issues with Pyrex.

You will find several of their products in my kitchen.

Perhaps the reason you've never had a problem with Pyrex is because it is VINTAGE PYREX that was manufactured before around year 2000. Several other sites point out that Pyrex used to be manufactured with more durable borosilicate glass that is more heat and shatter resistant.

When you buy Pyrex only get one with the capital P.

I love Pyrex....Never had a problem ......just once when I added water to a roast in the oven ....It shattered. You cannot pour cold water into a hot Pyrex...I know now to boil water to add to a cooking roast while cooking in oven . Still learning at 50.

Guest

I agree with you 100%. I've been using Pyrex for close to 50 years.

I started learning to cook with my late mother's Pyrex dishes.

Never ever have any exploded, cracked, or chipped. I think the problem is with this newer generation wanting everything done in a hurry and that they don't want to take the time to do things the proper way.

Need to replace a damaged lid on my 4 cup clear Pyrex storage container.

When I call a company during regular business hours for whatever reason, I expect to talk with a service representative and not have a computer answer me and then hang up.

Pyrex - Broken lids

I have already replaced these lids once. I bought the entire set of glass storage bowls, and it becomes more expensive to purchase lids than to just buy a whole new set of bowls.

I need lids for the bowls I have.

I can't have multiple bowls with no lids, that makes no sense. This product is substandard, at the very least.
